Dental Crowns or caps are custom made restorations usually made off site at a laboratory and fit over your prepared natural tooth. Crowns are available in a variety of materials to aid function and aesthetics. Here at Confidental Clinic Purley, your Dental Surgeon will discuss your options with you depending on your individual requirements.
Crowns are required or advised for various reasons including:
- Restore function to a broken tooth
- Protecting a weakened tooth vulnerable to fracture, i.e. if it has had root canal therapy
- Improve the aesthetics of a tooth / teeth or replace existing crowns with poor aesthetics or function
Type of Crowns Available:
Zirconia is a particularly strong metal-free material. It is first class in meeting both strength and cosmetic factors. Zirconia is strong enough to withstand forces of mastication so can be used for restorations on both front and back teeth.
EMAX was specifically designed to replicate a natural tooth. It is a composition of lithium disilicate glass ceramic which is translucent, durable and strong and can be used for restorations on both front and back teeth.
- All Porcelain
All Porcelain crowns are usually used for restorations on front teeth due to their highly aesthetic properties. These crowns have a natural, translucent appearance.
Gradia Crowns are metal-free, strong and have high-wear resistance. As they do not contain metal, they are more naturally aesthetic than bonded metal crowns.
- Porcelain Bonded to Metal
These crowns are strong very strong due to the metal substructure yet still aesthetically pleasing as porcelain is bonded to the metal. Porcelain bonded crowns are recommended for patients who have heavy bites due to their robust strength.
