Our Purley dentist looks at differences between the various types of orthodontics.
The array of orthodontic systems available to straighten teeth can be overwhelming. At the Confidental Clinic in Purley, we have available, amongst others, Invisalign, Damon Braces, Lingual Braces and Inman Aligner. Each of these have specific roles to play and may be used for different situations.
In today’s blog, we take a brief look at each of the four types above to indicate the specific benefits and situations in which each might be used, following a thorough examination by our dentist.
Invisalign braces are an excellent and popular choice where appropriate. Avoiding the use of wires and brackets altogether, Invisalign braces are actually a series of custom transparent trays that fit over the teeth, gradually returning the teeth to their correct position.
Ideal for – Generally crooked teeth, including the rear and side teeth
Advantages – Comfortable, almost invisible, convenient
Disadvantages – Relatively long treatment period in some cases
These braces are excellent for people who need teeth straightening in just a short time. Their revolutionary design means that teeth can usually be straightened without the need for removal of any teeth.
Ideal for – Relatively minor corrections
Advantages – Less visible than traditional braces, fast acting, fewer appointments needed
Disadvantages – Not suitable for more extensive misalignment. Not the cheapest method available.
Lingual braces are unusual in that they are attached to the rear side of the teeth, making them a very discreet orthodontic system. They are used for the visible front teeth only and are a great aesthetic choice which enables easy cleaning of the front surface of the teeth.
Ideal for – Crooked front teeth
Advantages – Discreet, keep teeth easy to clean, excellent for wind instrument players etc due to the position of the braces.
Disadvantages – May feel a little strange initially, not one of the fastest acting orthodontics, more difficult to place and remove due to position
The ‘Inman Aligner’ is a removable system that can be removed when eating etc. It is one of the fastest acting and most affordable orthodontics available and can be used for many minor problems.
Ideal for – Overcrowding, cross bite, protruding teeth
Advantages – Fast acting, affordable, convenient
Disadvantages – Not suitable for rear teeth, minor corrections only.
