Not just for teenagers with crooked teeth….!
Many of us probably associate the wearing of dental braces with teenagers. Teeth often start to grow crookedly as our faces develop and it is not unusual for teenagers to require braces to correct this unsightly problem.
It is not just teenagers though who can benefit from wearing dental braces.
Many adults have used one of the selection of orthodontics available at the Confidental Clinic in Purley to correct their uneven smile.
There are two predominant reasons why adults may have crooked teeth.
- They required braces as a teenager but declined to have them, quite possibly due to the highly visible appearance of traditional metal braces.
- When a tooth is lost, unless replaced by an artificial tooth replacement such as a dental implant, bone loss occurs in that area and, over time, teeth will gradually move into the vacant space. As these teeth move, they create spaces for other teeth to move into, and this can continue until the patient has quite crooked and uneven teeth.
One of the main factors deterring adults from wearing dental braces is their visibility. A mouth full of metal braces is not ideal when attending an interview or when socialising, for example. The visibility issue is no longer a factor though as a wide range of ‘invisible braces’ are now available which can correct a wide range of orthodontic problems in a discreet, and often quite speedy, manner.
One of the most popular of these new style of braces is the Invisalign system. A large part of their popularity is due to the fact that, unlike other braces, they do not use wires or brackets and, instead, use a series of removable transparent trays which fit directly over the teeth. This method allows for their removal when eating meals or when cleaning the teeth, thereby removing two key problems with the traditional approach.
Other methods, which are available at the Confidental Clinic, include Lingual Braces, Inman Aligner and Damon Braces. All of these do use the wire and brackets method to straighten teeth, but use tooth-coloured, finer materials, making them much more discreet than traditional braces.
In order to select the most appropriate braces for your own situation, a consultation with our Purley teeth straightening dentist will be necessary. They will examine your teeth and discuss the appropriate options available to you.
