Restoring the Appearance of Severely Stained Teeth

When teeth whitening isn’t sufficient, consider dental veneers.

Our Purley dental practice regularly sees patients who are unhappy about the way that their teeth look.

The most common of these complaints regards the colour of the teeth. In many cases, this is simply due to age and diet, leaving the teeth looking a little yellow and lacking the whiteness that the patient wishes for.

For these patients, a simple teeth whitening procedure is often all that is necessary and the procedure can even be done in the comfort of your own home.

Severe staining

Whilst this procedure is an excellent choice for most patients who have discoloured teeth, for some the discolouration has gone beyond the stage where the treatment would be fully effective. Lifelong smokers, or those who have been heavy coffee drinkers for many years may well find that their teeth have become almost brown due to the staining effects of these products.

Whilst whitening them would have some effect, it is unlikely that it would produce the whiteness that is usually desired. For these patients of the Confidental Clinic in Purley, we are able to offer an alternative in dental veneers.

Veneers

Whilst this procedure is not quite as straightforward as a teeth whitening procedure, it is highly effective and works by replacing the stained enamel at the front of the teeth with veneers made from porcelain or composite. The veneers are tailor made specifically for each individual patient and are made at a dental laboratory using impressions of the patient’s teeth.

To ease any slight discomfort that might be felt during the procedure, a local anaesthetic is applied and a very fine layer will then be removed from the front surface of the teeth before the impressions are taken.

As it can take a week or so for the veneers to be made, temporary veneers will be fitted to protect the teeth and reduce the sensitivity that would otherwise be felt.

Once the veneers have been produced, you will be invited back to your local Purley dentists where will will remove the temporary veneers and fit the newly produced ones using a very strong dental cement to ensure that they remain attached.

Cracks and chips

Because veneers actually replace the affected surface of the teeth rather than simply whitening them, the procedure is also excellent for those who have hairlines crack. Small chips in the teeth can also be repaired using this method.
