Veneers – when teeth whitening isn’t enough

Our Purley dentist looks at the choices available for patients with heavily stained teeth.

Whilst a teeth whitening procedure produces excellent results for most people, there are circumstances where it may be insufficient.

Unfortunately not all teeth can reach the same level of whiteness with whitening treatment. The active ingredient which is used penetrates the enamel and reaches the pulp inside the tooth, making it a lighter colour and also whitens the enamel surface of your teeth.

However, if the enamel of the teeth is heavily stained as may be the case, for example, in a long term heavy smoker; whilst some improvement using this procedure should be seen, it may not be as significant as the patient hoped for.

In some cases, our Purley dentist will be able to tell you, with some certainty, that a teeth whitening procedure will not be sufficient to give you the white teeth that you desire. When this situation arises, the next available option is to have dental veneers fitted.

Dental veneers

Dental veneers are made from porcelain and are matched to the colour of your teeth to make them natural looking. Our dentist will take impressions, prepare your teeth and select the appropriate veneer colour after a detailed consultation with you. Temporary veneers will also be fitted to protect your teeth whilst your new ones are being produced. Once the dental laboratory has returned your finished veneers to us, the temporary veneers will be removed and the new ones attached using a strong dental adhesive.

Veneers are extremely robust and can cope with normal use, although patients should take care not to bite down on hard objects such as fingernails or pens, as this can occasionally cause them to become detached. In the very unlikely event that this happens, please call the Confidental Clinic in Purley and our dentist will assess to see if the veneer can be reattached. them. Please do not attempt to do this yourself!

Gum health

Whilst the veneer can’t decay as it is made from porcelain, the rest of your tooth is susceptible to decay and gum disease can still occur. You should, therefore, make sure that you continue to follow a good oral health care regimen, with regular brushing and inter dental cleaning. Naturally, we will continue to monitor your oral health during your regular checks at our Purley practice and advise where any treatment or extra care is needed.

If you are unhappy with the colour of your teeth and would like to have a whiter smile, why not call the Confidental Clinic on 020 8660 8923 to arrange a consultation where we can discuss the available options with you.
